Warfare Rap (not to be confused with Gangsta Rap)
"But those who seek to destroy my life
shall go down into the depths of the earth;
they shall be given over to the power of the sword,
they shall be a portion for the jackals."
Psalm 63:9-10
I like to use the Psalms as springboards for spiritual warfare prayer. Though David had physical enemies seeking to destroy his life, I have spiritual (but equally real) enemies who seek to destroy me. Whether I realize it or not, I am under siege by spiritual forces of evil in an unseen realm (Ephesians 6:12). Christine pointed out something interesting about these verses from Psalm 63 the other morning as we were brushing teeth and hair. The promise to us is that our enemies will be given over to the sword of the Lord. Paul called that sword the "sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:17). It is this sword that we are to use as we, by the Spirit, put to death the sins that seek to take up residence in our lives (Romans 8:13).
So, being in the goofy mood that I was that morning, I began to rap (if you want to call it that) the following combination of rhythm and rhyme. I later "rapped" it to my kids and they challenged me to "rap it" to the college age Sunday morning class. So I did.
So, here...rap this for yourself as a reminder that you should "be killing sin or it will be killing you" (John Owen)...
I like to fight with the might
Of the Sword of the Lord
It makes the devil turn back
He knows he can’t afford
To be sliced and diced
Makes the demons think twice
‘Cause I’ll be killin’ sin
Lest it be killin’ me
I put the Sword to it’s throat
Satan on his knees
But it’s not my power
And it’s not my might
the Sword of the Spirit
Puts the devil to flight!
